The Power of Self-Compassion: My Journey to Well-Being
Beyond Balance: Lisa Clair’s Personal Journey to Well-Being Through Self-Compassion
Rethinking Balance in Well-Being
I used to believe that attaining a sense of well-being required constantly striving for “a perfect balance.” Over time I’ve come to understand the ways in which I can truly support my own well-being and encourage myself to thrive.
Cultivating Self-Compassion
As I’ve grown into myself and navigated my own initiations, pathways, and awakenings over the past few years, I have learned that true well-being isn’t about achieving a flawless equilibrium. Instead, it comes from cultivating a deeper connection with myself, to know that no matter what life phase I am in, I can extend compassion towards myself.
Honoring Awareness and Practice
Honoring this awareness and putting it into practice as often as possible is what I aim to focus on in my journey towards feeling well, whole, and aligned. Here, I’ll share some of my own personal practices—tools which support this connection to my personal wellness, as well as my approach to guiding clients on their journeys.
A Holistic Perspective on Well-Being
There are many ways to nurture the gardens of our inner and outer landscape. My own journey has been informed not only through my life experience, but also drawing from my curiosity towards indigenous wisdom, yogic traditions, multicultural perspectives, and varying thoughts on psychology.
Beyond Happiness: Defining True Well-Being
Well-being is holistic. It isn’t just about feeling “happy” all the time. It extends beyond just physical and mental health to include my connection to community, my sources of support, and the things that ignite my curiosity, passion, and sense of purpose. It’s about how I respond to challenges and who I choose to be in those moments. It’s how I’ve learned to embrace adversity and life’s ups and downs with deeper reverence and greater acceptance.
The Harmony of Self and the World
Well-being is the harmony between how I feel, how I connect with myself, and how I engage with the world around me. It is deeply personal, shaped by our unique experiences and definitions.
Creating Our Own Experience
My experience working as a yoga teacher and working in the fields of transpersonal and holistic psychology have taught me one of the most profound lessons: That I am the creator of my own experience.
And as Jaiya John so beautifully writes in Daughter, Drink This Water...
"With life, you are given paint and canvas, and the freedom to create works that hang in the gallery of your soul."
Navigating Life’s Ebbs and Flows
Life naturally ebbs and flows, bringing moments when we feel disconnected, lost, or off course... whether it's navigating a major transition like a breakup or move, rediscovering who we are, feeling drawn to a spiritual path but unsure where to begin, or realizing our health and wellness have taken a backseat. And then there are times when we feel deeply aligned, connected, and at ease. The key is building a foundation of trust, love, and adaptability within ourselves—something steady that anchors us, no matter what’s unfolding around us.
The Power of Choice in Well-Being
So, what do we choose to create with the paints and canvas life gives us? We always have the agency to pick up the brush and shape our experience. That’s where these practices and tools come in. We don’t have to know exactly what the painting will look like before we begin—we just have to start. The same goes for connecting with our well-being: exploring small, intentional practices can lead to profound transformation.
Practical Tools for Cultivating Well-Being
One of the most powerful tools for well-being is learning to attune to our natural cycles. For menstruating individuals, this may mean connecting with the rhythm of your cycle. For others, it could be tuning into the moon, the seasons, or simply the phase of life you're in.
I guide my clients in embracing cyclical living, honoring the natural ebbs and flows of energy rather than resisting them. When we recognize these rhythms—whether emotional, physical, or energetic—we develop deeper self-trust and alignment. Understanding these cycles helps us navigate life with more clarity and ease.
The Role of Somatic Work
At the heart of my coaching is somatic work, which bridges the mind and body for deeper healing and knowing. The body holds immense wisdom. Our experiences, emotions, and even traumas live in our fascia and nervous system. Through breathwork, visualization, movement, and energetic practices (such as chakra work), we access deeper layers of awareness, release stored tension, and create new patterns of resilience.
Engaging the Body in Healing
In sessions, we go beyond talk-based coaching to engage the body as an active participant in accessing information to guide your vision forward. When we work with somatic tools, we regulate the nervous system, reconnect with intuition, and open space for transformation.
Clients come to me feeling disconnected—overwhelmed by transitions, stress, or uncertainty. Together, we cultivate practices that help you feel grounded, empowered, and in tune with your inner wisdom to make strides forward.
Integrating Yoga and Energy Awareness
Alongside somatic work, I draw from my background in yoga, nature-based healing, and energy awareness. I teach Yin Yoga and I practice Ashtanga Yoga, a deeply grounding and detoxifying system that supports physical, emotional, and energetic balance. Movement, breath, and ritual are powerful ways to clear stagnant energy, realign with purpose, and build that foundation of self-trust... integral dimensions of our coaching work together.
A Final Reflection on Peace and Self-Discovery
And I will leave you with one last quote:
"She wanted Peace. So she played beautiful music, painted beautiful expressions. It was not enough. She went on long walks. Gave away possessions. Smiled more. Stopped multitasking. Not enough...
Then, one day, she looked inside herself, the place she had run from all her life. She found two truths: the concentrated ego of suffering and fear, and the simmering ember of Peace. Realizing that Peace was a seed already inside her, she decided to try something new. She decided to Love more. Herself. Others. All things. In every moment. She opened. The ocean inside came out. The ocean outside came in. She dissolved in two oceans. Became immeasurable Lightness. She found Peace. Love is the sunlight that awakens the seed of Peace."
— Jaiya John
A Call to Connect
With that said, there are many tools and practices that we will utilize and leverage in our sessions together, but the true change happens when we go inside of ourselves and find that seed. Together, we will blend compassionate dialogue with actionable structure and commitment to create meaningful change—allowing you to feel more connected, fulfilled, and expansive in the present moment and in creating your future.
